The original concept for the Lead Guitar series, including the name lead came from Dennis Handa, then Marketing director for Fender Guitars.
The idea was to have a guitar that was cheaper than the Stratocaster and be attractive to players because of the neck feel as well as the pickup options.

Gregg Wilson was succeeded by John Page, who eventually headed the Fender Custom Shop.
The Lead Series have elements of the Stratocaster and Telecaster in their design with a body that is slightly smaller and with a slightly different shape than the Stratocaster, a Stratocaster-like neck (and headstock), and hardtail bridge with Telecaster-like string ferrules on the back of the body.
Solid-body electric bass guitars were also a Fender innovation. It had a headstock that was virtually identical to that of the Telecaster and a body that turned out to be a preview of the 1954 Strat.Between names, the company made the most of its remaining Fender Broadcaster decals by cutting off the word Broadcaster so that only the Fender brand made it onto the guitar’s headstock. Only about 60 Nocasters were made, which makes them extremely collectible, but by April of 1951 the guitar would finally get a name that would stick, the Telecaster. Unlike the Telecaster, whose ash body was outlined with rib-digging 45-degree edges, the Strat had a sculpted body that fit players like a glove.Three pickups gave the instrument unprecedented tonal range, as did a vibrato bar that would bend the guitar’s strings when pressed. We also have a keen interest in the very first reissue strats and teles made at the Corona, CA factory from 1985-1989.Our main luthier here at The Fender Reissue Shop has taken apart and inspected over 300 American Vintage Reissue Strats and Teles!
